Marie and Michelle Fanning came to my barn five years ago looking for part time help. They were thirteen years old at the time. You
know that feeling that you get when a certain something tugs at your intuition? At that particular time there was no need to increase
barn staff but these two young girls were tugging at my heartstrings. I was a young girl once too.
Marie and Michelle wanted
to be around horses so badly that it was indeed palatable. I created a job for them, what else could I do?
The first day I noticed
that they were having a difficult time with stall doors and water buckets...I mentioned this to their mother. She responded simply
and easily that they were legally blind. I stood there frozen and thunderstruck. The mother said that she could help them with their
designated chores. I said "No" and told her that the girls could take all the time they needed. I was so impressed with their respective
independence and their willingness to find their own way that the mom and I agreed to let them carry on...on their own.
Well,
one thing led to another and the girls wanted to ride. We started lessons on my O'le faithful lesson horse. Little by little they
started developing a wonderful feel which over time resulted in two very talented riders. They are nothing short of amazing on a horse.
They started showing and winning!
I wanted to share this story of two young girls that are on their way to becoming two wonderful
young adults. For those of you that believe that a dream is out of reach and is impossible to achieve...instead of thinking that you
can't, try thinking that you actually can! These two young ladies are proof that heart and determination will win out no matter the
obstacle.
